Known Bedbug Infestations

A few people have mentioned that it would be helpful to know what buildings are battling bedbug infestations so that other people do not unknowingly move into apartments that are infested. In that vein, I will continue to update this list as I get addresses.

This list will be most useful if it pinpoints buildings where the management has been sub-par in eradicating the problem and in fact exploits it in order to increase rents as people move out to escape the problem. (In rent-controlled buildings, landlords are allowed to raise rent every time a new tenant moves in.)

I lived at the Villa Soma @ 1554 Howard in SF where I was initially infested. They knowingly leased the apartment to me, knowing there was a bed bug infestation.

Hi Caitlin et all,

Just reading some of your earlier posts, noting that if your exterminator is not thorough you should say something to him.... What if your landlord hires an exterminator and has told you in advance that the person will not be doing these things that bedbug-savvy exterminators, like the ones mentioned here, should do to be thorough? My landlord has told me that the exterminator will only be spraying in the corners, not investigating or pulling out any furniture. Yet we cannot afford to get someone on our own. We also live in NYC. What are the legalities of this situation- what exactly are we within our right to demand? I have called housing and they are vague- I think they do not want to give me specifics until I file a formal complaint.... Thank you!

The bedbug problem in this building is ridiculous. It's really an unfortunate situation. A friend of mine had them, ignored them not knowing what they were and mistaking their bites for acne and thus allowed the building to continue to be filled with bedbugs. The building is rented/leased through Student Housing.Org who subleases to my school. The exterminator they used does nothing for this problem. In fact, while in terror admist a bedbug outbreak during the night after their "exterminator" came, roaches were in my apartment. When I brought in my own exterminator, the building security almost stopped him but the school security insisted they let him in. (That and I said I'd call NY1 and expose their building for being infested and doing a poor job of maintaining). When my school's sublet ends for this building, I doubt they will renew. However, before studenthousing.org leased this place, there where occupants who still live here via NYC single occupant rent laws, all of whom have told me this bedbug problem has been infesting this building for a very long time. Whoever owns this building has failed to take care of the situation and is spreading these creatures through the country via students moving in and out. My exterminator did an amazing job and I would absolutely recommend (http://www.positivepest.com/) Positive Pest Management. The guy was so nice and even cleaned up after. It's been about a week and I've been able to sleep very peacefully with my only real problem seemingly so far being paranoia (to the point of checking acne extensively to assure it is not a bedbug bite).

The building is:

The George Washington Hotel
23 Lexington Ave
New York, NY 10010

I do hope somebody does something about this. Several floors were infested last year ruining students term and one student is said to be filing a lawsuit against studenthousing.org for his money back. Please add this address to the list so that hopefully a real exterminator will come.

Anonymous1 - I honestly think that you have a right to an exterminator who will do a thorough job to rid your home of bedbugs. There is a basic line of livability that landlords have to provide to tenants. If they are not doing their utmost to provide basic livability, I believe you definitely have a case. The exterminator really should be doing the job in full.

Anonymous2 - I will post that address up shortly. Thanks for the tip!

HI everyone...sorry if this posting is a bit disjointed and if there are typos.....I'm in a big rush and am exhausted from my bedbug issue....

The address is: 15 Scadding Avenue Unit Toronto Ontario M5A 4E9

I am battling a bedbug problem currently thanks to the negligence of Toronto Housing (owned by the City of Toronto). The problems first occurred in August 2004 with another tenant near us (if anything occurred earlier, I am not aware then of the case), and proceeded to spread around us to our immediate neighbours until it hit us over the past few of months (potentially our problem started in Jan 2006 - i beleive i saw one hten in our bathroom but didn't knwo what i was looking at).
One woman even moved out because she was being refused treatment at some point. And I suspect the first people we know had it (in August 2004) moved out as well because of it, leaving the new tenants to get it (we know the new tenants got an infestation right as they moved in...)

Toronto Housing are currently fighting a very dirty battle with us over the issue, refusing compensation of course.
They also wouldn't supply alternate residence even during fumigations until i brought a lawyer in, and then only to look better in court (and only after much fighting from me and our lawyer) they sort of gave us a spare unit just for the fumigations (although staff keep coming into it thinking we aren't needing to be there anymore in that spare unit (depsite still having the infestation!)...once i was in my underwear even when they came in....and we can't shower in that spare unit or eat there (because it is in disprepair) and have no toilet seat....
in other words, its just a one night kind of stay, and i had to drag in a lawyer for it...meanwhile we have no where else to stay during the rest of the time that this is going on...
so in other words, they don't even give affected tenants alternate living places typically, and basically only try to do one treatment (again, i had to have a lawyer to negotiate more and I had to present them with damming information against them too in order to pressure them for more treatments)

Toronto hosuing is also continuing to this day to be negligent with the bedbug issue in our building....(despite my complaints and the lawsuit): htey are negligent with disposa (or lack of disposal in some cases) of infested items from other units that are known to be infested, right up to four days ago even: i.e. leaving matresses in common hallways and on balconies of infested units, not collecting potentially infested items that are disposed of in the garbage room adjoining our unit, and so on. I have to push for it to all get removed even....

I am going to court about the issue, my husband and I will likely have to declare bankruptcy, and we have filed to get out of our lease 1 month early. they said they would only let us out of our lease early if we dropped all legal issues with them - including damages they agreed to pay us over an unrelated flood they caused us in Sept 2005 -

and as long as we pay a 10$ CDN penalty for breaking the lease.
So they are even now punishing us with a 10 buck fee for this!

Also: we may have spread the problem to my elderly mother's house in a different city, for which treatment would be very extensive and thus highly likely to not be sucessful. we are monitoring the situation but we suspect it has indeed spread - even Toronto Housing's own exterminators (that are not outsourced but are working for the company itself) agree my mom's place is in trouble)... (we wouldn't have being doing laundry at her place and sleeping in our worn apartment bedclothes at her house had Toronto Housing informed us that units near us were still suffering from bedbugs and that we were at risk).
After having to go through mny dad's death a while ago, this is the last thing we all need....including my mom.

We even now have to use the extermoinator we hired for our new unit to do our car.....

Toronto Housing: They are a dirty bunch and will do anything to screw you I have discovered. The aren't even vaccuming outside infested units despite the fact they know people are dragging stuff out to get rid of infested things....as I mentioned, they wait and sometimes for months to remove infested items old tenants (who leave because of their infestations) leave behind....which we think is how ours occurred....a known infested mattress and boxspring was left out for months on a nearby balcony even.

And despite the lawsuit from me, they still keep leaving infested items out on the balconies of infested units, don't remove matresses in hallwys for days and so on....you think they'd try a nbit harder to look less negligent considerign i am presenting all of it in court....

They have even told tenants NOT to throw matresses out, for which the Toronto Board of Health is very upset about. the Board of health told me that Toronto Housing is doing this so that they dont' have to buy people new matresses....
no kidding.

It is indeed a rent controlled building, and i think you are right that they leave things go just to drive people out, not just for cost-saving measures as I had originally thought.
I hadn't thought of that angle that you haev proposed - just thought they were trying to get out of compensation and damages - until my mom suggested it to me today,
and then I noticed you suggesting it on your site.

Anyways, the address is: 15 Scadding Avenue Toronto Ontario M5A 4E9

That is near the Isabella Street Toronto location that someone else posted...i believe.

They also own other infested buildings in the area spanning Jarvis to Parliament streets and from the Esplanade all the way up to Bloor St. East. I know there is a building at Shuter and Parliament owned by them that is infested (a staff member who works there told me).

And another building that is almost across the street from us had 250 out of 300 units infested. Not sure if its a toronto Housing building or not though, though i think it is....

So avoid that entire region, from Jarvis west to Parliament and from Esplanade to Bloor East - its one solid area of infestations, particularly those buildings owned by Toronto Housing.

I also want to mention that
My husband lost days at work which then almost cost his company clients (which is especially bad because they are almost folding).
I have to drop a course I have already paid for because the problem is so all-encompassing and time consuming that i haven't even opened a book in the almost the month the course has been on, i have midterms and assignments starting now and i have no idea when i will even open the text........

we are getting at most 2 hours of sleep a night since the end of April....just to handle the problem (not due to the bites anymore, we stopped sleeping there). How many weeks is that of 2 hours a sleep a night (when we are lucky)....weeks and weeks.

Beyond all of this....
As I mentioned, we are moving but have taken huge measures to try to not bring this with us when we move (it was a huge moral dilemma): we are going to continue treatments at our new place as much as possible...out of our poacket, with a guy who is very aggressive from what I know....
he will only be treating our remaining furniture, tv, stereo, computer, vacuum etc....and a tiny tiny amount of clothing.
at the same time,
we are paying for a storage unit to quarantine things to try to then get this exterminator do treat some (but not many) of the clothes at a later date when the furniture etc. has already been done, and when we are emontionally able to take teh rest of it on (also, at that point, any eggs we missed will have hatched and starved - it takes about four months to get them to hacth and starve, from what i know....that leaves only nymphs and adults, that hopefuilly then can get treated with aerosol once we are ready to tackel those things).....

we also had to resort to the storage unit so as to remove clutter from our current unti so the furniture. tv, stero etc. and unit itself can be properly treated repeatedly....

what we haven't gotten treated of items (most of what we own in fact cannot be treated or washed): those items will be quarantined for 1.5 years to starve the bugs...storage is $145 a month out of our pocket for that whole time....
and we'll need to buy new things like jackets, other clothes etc....while that is all in quarantine.....

but we still hope to take out a few more clothes from quarantine in the fall/winter so we don't have to buy a whole year's worth of clothes, but it won't be many things...when we do so, we have to start up treatments again in our new unit. The rest will be quarantined down for 1.5 years.....

If anyone has any questions about how horribly Toronto Housing has handled all of this, please feel free to contact me.
I'd be happy to provide more details about it, considering I haven't given many here.

I would love to hear from anyone in Toronto or anywhere in Ontario that has had this problem.
And anyone who knows of any legal cases in the area as well, just so that I can get a sense of how successful or unsuccessful we may be in court....

Also: does anyone know if drycleaning clothes works on killing all stages, including eggs?
everyone I talk to gives differing information on that, and even the university websites that discuss the issue seem to have differing opinions (from Canadian to Australian to American university web sites). Does it work?

if you need any other information, please feel free to ask.

George Washington Hotel
23 Lexington Ave
New York, NY 10010

Yes I live in this building as well. Moved in for the summer, in which time I have contracted two bugs I had never, EVER even known existed. BEDBUGS and scabies.

Speaking with the other residences, this seems to not be the first time. One person suggested, and I really hope this isn't true; that the bedbugs may have mated with the scabies and thus when you get one you get the other? I've never had this before and have not had sexual relations with anyone new in the past year. This is a living nightmare which the owners pretend is not happening. Not to mention, the building is falling apart (literally... sometimes the bathrooms collapse and somebody ends in loss of a ceiling/foor); thus giving the bedbugs endless cracks to run through.

There have been an endless amount of black spots appearing on the ceiling of the bathroom. Oddly enough, I'm really hoping that's mold because I'd rather have mold than bedbugs inside my ceiling.

anonymous-- FYI it is probably not possible for scabies and bed bugs to mate. Scabies is a tiny mite that burrows under your skin. What is extremely likely, however, is that you visited a doctor with bed bug bites, and the doctor thought you had scabies, treated you for scabies. And then you continued to be bitten by bed bugs. That seems to be the diagnosis doctors make. My doctor told me if I had bed bugs I would see them... but I am not so sure she's right.

I guess Bed bugs are here in D.C.! I heard rumors about "some bug" issues at our address 1614 17th St. NW Wash D.C. I thought it was just chatter talk, I'd never heard about bed bugs. There here and spreading fast!! I work nights and sleep during the day, and the other day, I saw this strange bug on my pillow. I freaked!!!!! (I hate hate anything creepy cwarly) then I went to the web, to find out what was this bug. I've been staying at a friends the last few days, not able yet to return to my apt. So now with more info I'm getting ready to aim war on my apt. Which with a low income and late hours will be hard. Thank god I havent gotten any reaction to any bites that I've had. Just the thought of this hole mess is really taking its toll on me...

This is another one near the Jarvis-Parliament-Shuter area previously mentioned. While NOT run by Toronto Housing, these cute little bachelor suites have an ongoing bedbug problem. Originating in the superintendent's suite, he knowingly rents the rest of the building without making them aware that all he does is spray his bed every now and again. They've spread to my suite, driving myself, my partner and my cat crazy with bites and he's not doing much about it.
I've given notice, found a lovely new space and intend to see what my rights are regarding bed replacement and moving costs... because I would NOT have moved there in the first place if I had known. Don't let the pretty bay windows fool you.

I think people who post to this list should really differentiate between an "infested" building that's teeming with bedbugs and a building that has simply had a case of bedbugs. I recently signed a lease for one of these buildings, and, after typing in the address to google, freaked out when this blog came up. I've talked to the broker, the landlord, and tenants of the building, and the "infested" building listed really only had a single case three months ago that was exterminated and fixed.

I also think rumors should be verified before being posted on this almightly black list of new york apartment buildings. I've had bedbugs before and understand what all of you are going through, but keep in mind that bedbugs CAN be extermintated even if it is difficult sometimes. let's differentiate between buildings that HAD infestations and buildings that HAVE infestations due to a negligent landlord. If an eye-witness story isn't given with an address, I really don't think it should be listed.

Also, if you're posting a building address, please at least put a name down, instead of posting anonymously. While this list can help a lot of people, it can also cause unnecessary stress for others, and a contact person would be helpful.

My partner an I are currently fighting bedbugs in our teensy apartment. It is one of the most awful things ever, but it is at least a little bit of a relief to read that others have gotten rid of them. That makes me believe that we can too. My biggest concern is that I traveled to stay at a friend's beach house this past weekend. We had had an exterminator treat our apartment for the first time on Thursday and I went to the beach on Saturday. Most of what I brought came straight out of plastic bags and had been washed, but what is the liklihood that I brought bedbugs with me to her house as well? I cannot get any answers on this and the exterminator talks as if everyone I touch can be infested in the beat of a heart...

To Anonymous in ABC City - I can't say for certain, but I think that unless you have a VERY heavy infestation, the odds of your carrying bedbugs with you to a friend's house on an overnight trip are slim. Particularly since you packed everything in plastic bags and washed it before packing. It's definitely not an impossibility, but I'm not sure that they transmit as easily as people tend to think. I'd keep washing your clothes and packing them in sealed plastic bags before going away, just to be certain.

Tenant at 99 North 8th St. asks a very good question:
What are our legal rights for reclaiming financials? What is landlord responsible for?

12:38 AM
Blogger the Caitlinator said...

I wish I had a good answer to the question about financial accountability and landlord responsibilities. I'm not a lawyer so I don't know the answer with much to back it, but I do believe that all landlords are responsible to provide livable homes for their tenants. I think that does include pest control, which obviously includes bedbugs. If the landlord doesn't treat the building appropriately, I believe you can withhold rent and/or deduct the cost of any personal exterminators you've hired on your own. However, I think that there are also some gray areas involved. I would definitely recommend talking to a lawyer (if you could find one who would speak to you without charging you for the advice) or even take a tenant's rights course at a local community college to try to get a more definitive answer. Also, I believe the laws are different from state to state as well. Whatever you decide to do, I highly recommend documenting every piece of your experience with bedbugs. Keep detailed and itemized receipts from all exterminators you hire, laundromats you use, dry cleaners, new furniture purchased, dated and time-stamped photographs of bites, bedbug carcasses with notes as to where you found them and when, etc. If you can, as soon as you discover you've been bitten, if you see the bug, take it with you in a Ziploc bag to a doctor and have them diagnose the bite with a written letter. These things will all help you if you have to pursue any kind of legal action in order to get some money back.

I cannot really move out, as i'm a college student and cannot afford any other place. How long would it take to spread to my apartment, and is there any news station i can contact about it. I called New York housing, but to no avail. Also these bastards just keep leaving their beds in the hallway, which i've fought about. I'm angry and disgusted. i think it is wonderful you are keeping this list. is there any way this could turn into a website in and of itself--listing known infestations around the world?

the reason i say this is as long as it is just a blog posting (and an older one), few people will see it.

i think if more people could see it, it would be a resource and might even put pressure on people. we could get more publicity for our plight.

if you're interested in this, i am willing to help. and i am sure someone out there could design a form and / or offer hosting in order to make it an automated process of adding a listing. they could be grouped by location.

This is a student co-op for students attending UCLA and other schools in the West Los Angeles area. The management doesn't seem all that concerned about the problem and apparently it's been like this for quite a while now. Be warned, this place might be cheap, but it's not worth it

The landlords knew about the problem and refused to treat it for months, allowing the bedbugs to spread through out the entire building. As a result, many tenants moved out, and though there continues to be a problem, they still lease out the new apartments. The have hired a 'proffessional' company (one old man with a spray can) who has been by a couple times, though it hasn't made a difference.

Management has known about the bedbug problem for years. Recently the tenants association has organized to address the problem. Management response has been sub-par, including voluntary (passive) exterminations which only focus on mattresses and bedding.

The D.C. Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) has completed a building-wide inspection which should report an infestation. More to come. (9/12/2006)

Three weeks after I moved into this apartment building, I found bed bugs. The landlord claimed that there was no complaint from other tenants, and suggested that I might have brought the bugs in, even though I had no idea what bed bugs were before I moved here. After my numerous requests to hire a pest control operator, the landlord has done nothing so far. I reported the issued to Toronto Public Health, and might escalate to Municipal Licensing and Standards.

The above address is a hostel in DC. I stayed the weekend of 9/10/06. Wow, the infestation was immense. I am from NY and once I found one festing on me, I flipped out. I took the nasty critter to the front desk and he was so unimpressed by it. I washed everything I owned in hot hot water at the hostel, sealed the clean clothes in plastic bags, showered, put on clean clothes and booked out of there.

I really hope I didn't bring one of their nasty eggs home with me. A girlfriend of mine in Park Slope went nuts for over three months trying to get rid of her bedbugs.

This site is scary in how many people are reporting infestations. How can we win!?

Experienced horrible bedbug problem last year after only livng here three months. My landlord refused to exterminate saying it was against their policy.(wtf?) Finally, they sent some unlicensed exterminator who sprayed my mattress and bedroom. They're back again. We just threw out the mattress. The whole apt building has them.

Bedbugs and Malaria were both eradicated in North America with DDT by the 1930's.  Then, while we were complacent, a woman named Rachel Carson started a wave of anti-DDT hysteria with a book she wrote called "Silent Spring".  This hysteria culminated in the director of the EPA overruling his own adminstrative judge who had spent six months in heards on the safety of DDT, and found no credible evidence of DDT toxicity to humans or birds.

Since that time, thousands of people have died of Malaria in Africa and Asia, while our government fights like hell against anyone trying to take effective measures to address the problem.

I hope it doesn't take a return of Malaria to the USA for us to get DDT back on the market here.  The bedbugs are bad enough.

Check out diatomaceous earth - it is a natural product that will kill these critters - you can dust a room with it and unlike the chemicals which disperse over time, DE will keep on killing the bugs.

Down south where they have other bug problems, they put this stuff in the walls and leave it, essentially building into the houses a natural, non-chemical pesticide that will keep killing.

I live in a house and I had a few emotional break downs in the past 4 months since I discovered I had them.

I don't know where I got it from -could have been from mice that got into the house, second hand clothing stored by my elderly father, public transit, my work, or from a friends apt/condo who never told me they had it or didn't know they had it.

The pest control guys told me he treated a huge 5 star hotel in Toronto as well as a mental institution run by the government. I can't be 100% sure which places they are because apparently the Pest control people have a code where they can't divulge that information - a load of crock for the public.

He also told me that he gets 1-2 calls PER DAY for bed bugs. Multiply that for each pest control company in the city and that's an epidemic our city isn't even addressing nor is our media.

So if you are travelling to the Toronto area, think twice! I have cancelled travel plans to Europe and NYC because I am afraid of getting re-infected.

The commenter with HIV in NYC should get to a doctor asap. I am not sure what the ramifications are, but I remember one item somewhere (probably a health website, maybe webmd, maybe another) said those with HIV who are being bitten should tell the doctor because it may affect their treatment or meds. Don't be alarmed, but do let the docs know and make sure they look into it if they don't know offhand.

When I returned I noticed the bites which became numerous and crazy-making. After finding out what was causing my misery I phoned the hotel. They denied everything. Because I live on a very small fixed income I have been trying to solve it myself. I am now contemplating suicide since I learned that they stop biting once your dead. They only want to eat you alive. As for the Hyatt, I consider their actions to be criminal. I have no one to help me deal with this situation. I am becoming hopeless.

77 Huntley St. in Toronto.

We've had confirmation in our unit, and now other tenants are saying they've had bites for months and didn't know what it is. I know management has had pest control in the building (not sure for what) doing some individual units and the common areas like the garbage rooms/chutes but not the entire building. This is definately a pain in the ass, and definately upsetting. Particularly since, every day, idiots leave boxes of garbage and furniture in the garbage rooms on the floor. As well, many tenants have a habit of leaving their doors sitting ajar for air flow.

I made yet another trip out to the hardware store today and saw a shelf with a big sign taped to it "Best for Bed Bugs $14.99" in the insecticide aisle. Apparently this is becoming a huge problem in Toronto. And Canadian Tire is sold out of Murphy's Oil Soap.

7:02 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I should mention (in addition to my comments above) that 77 Huntley is not a Toronto Housing building, but the management now accepts the overflow of Toronto Housing applicants into this building. When we moved in there was a high vacancy rate (likely due to the really high rent downtown, as many other buildings are the same) and the class of tenants were working professionals primarily. Now, likely due to the rent supplement tenants, we have a large amount of elderly, disabled/developmentally challanged people living here. Not to cast a stigma on the problem of bedbugs, but seemingly a lot of tenants will have trouble with the housekeeping needed to eradicate these bugs and will make it near impossible to get rid of them in this building. In addition, the overall class of the building has decreased - with an increase in crackheads and homeless people lingering about, the new Goodwill store that relocated into our adjacent shopping mall, and a lot of people encountered in the elevators who don't even bathe themselves, let alone clean their units I'm sure. Our pool is closed frequently because of people trashing it. Management is decent and will respond quickly to problems, I just don't think they know how to get a handle on things. I pay nearly $1500 per month to live here, and moving is not an option right now. Besides - we'd just end up someone as bad as here.

Personally, we've only seen maybe a dozen bugs, and are into day 4 of cleaning, bagging, laundering, spraying, dusting and scrubbing everything. We've cleaned out a lot of clutter, and threw out over 70 garbage bags of stuff we don't need or want anymore, or can't treat. We have not found a nest in our unit, so they are no doubt stragglers from another apartment. I just want to live in a bubble and not have to deal with this anymore.

Hello all. Just wanted to leave a note about a building my wife and I and daughter are leaving, it's 55 Pineapple Street in Brooklyn. We had a 'mild' case of bedbugs. It's a mixed rental/co-op building (we rented), and the co-op mgmt. company we worked with on treatments was amazing, totally responsive, great to work with! The rental mgmt company was totally MIA, and when our lease renewal came up, they wanted to raise our rent 10% to stay another year, and we hear that they are going to try to rent the apt. for $2800. It IS a really nice 1-bedroom apt in Brooklyn Heights, but if anyone reads this and looks at an apt in this building, ask questions! Like I said, the co-op company was great, and (knock wood) we've been ok since late December, but I can GUARANTEE that the rental management company is NOt going to inform prospective renters, so I'm trying to post where ever I can to spread the word to just be careful and ask!

They did my whole building in early January. I love my roommate but he had to get rid of stuff. I literally threw out over a TON of what amounted to basically trash so they could exterminate and so the landlord wouldn't bother him (he's the lease holder). They do the building from stem to stern......and a few weeks later my neighbour across the hall who never had much of a problem GOT THEM...not an infestation but enough so he freaked out. I don't blame him. THEN the OTHER DAY I SAW one and had been BITTEN a couple of times. I had some products I'd bought online and retreated. in the cracks in the floor and in all the cracks in general. I'd advise people to go to doyourownpestcontrol.com. It has a lot of the different sprays and dusts you can use because this day in age, you should always have something effective on hand. Whew.

I have been to court many times to seek assistance with forcing my landlords to exterminate the building . Unfortunately, I disclosed that I had HIV and asthma and wanted to know exactly what chemicals were being sprayed. What happened was that I was met with harrassment and told that I was refusing to allow exterminators into my apartment, that I had chemical sensitivities, that I refused to sign a waiver of liability for the landlord's exterminator etc....The judge in the case took the landlord's side and I ended up paying for my own extermination. The lady next door allowed the super to do her extermination even though I told her it wouldn't work. 2 years later and suddenly the exterminator is coming to treat her place and she's throwing her junk out into the hallway without being properly bagged. Now the neighbor on the opposite side of me says he just got bit. This is a joke! NYC housing courts are so corrupt!

Please add 332 East 91st in Manhattan to your list. It's not an "infestation" but we have them, and despite several treatments, they keep coming back, which tells me the problem is in the building and not just my apartment. The landlord has been told but refuses to do anything because nobody else has complained. Lease is up in three months...can't wait....

Just wanted to let everyone know that Cambridge Village Apartments (Home Properties) in Levittown NY gave us bed bugs. It was a nightmare....I think I was allergic to the bites, they became so swollen and painful on me. We had to throw out our bed (matress AND boxspring) and move EVERYTHING out of our bedroom so the exterminator could come and spray. What's worse is that the landlords here offered no consolation about the whole ordeal, the super was with us when we threw out the bed and never once told us that we could get help in buying a new bed. Needless to say, we are definitely moving out of here.

Never move to Astoria NY. It's apparently the bedbug capital of NYC. This has been such a nightmare for me. I can't sleep. I have pets. And I feel like I'm the only one in my building who really takes it seriously. The landlord has hired a PCO, and he seems to know what he's doing, but it doesn't matter if he's good when people don't properly clean and bag up their clothes/shoes/whatever before the extermination. They also keep throwing furniture on the sidewalk. I desperately want to move, but am afraid they'd just follow me. I love NYC, but this is making me want to go home. The landlord had them, and he wasn't saying anything. The other apt has the worst infestation and claimed that they hadn't seen anything. They, they threw out a couch on the sidewalk...NOT covered in plastic. If I hadn't seen one on the wall, I don't think anyone would have ever done anything.

2327 Brunswick Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Transglobe- Ocean Towers #2 and #3 have bedbeug infestations, the landlords won't accept any responsibility, claiming the bugs could have "hitchhiked" from a bar. Don't move in, the rent is much too high to deal with this nonsense. I have had the apartment sprayed, but people down the hall forgot about their apointment and decided to skip it, and now I am dealing with the bugs again. I'm sleeping with the lights on to deter them from biting in the night. Disgusting.

The landlord has been responsive to our calls, but doesn't treat the whole building. He acts like this was the first they've seen of the vermin in years, but the exterminator tells us that he's been here in the building many times. Rent at your own risk.

A family member lives in this building and had mysterious rashes for months. The dermatologist was stumped. I stayed at his house just 2 days ago, and when I woke up, I had the rash as well. He then received a note on his door, (at 10pm!) advising him that there was a bed bug problem, and giving him instructions to prepare for the exterminators who were coming at 9am!!!!! There was also a warning to ask your doctor if it would be safe to be back in the building if you have a health condition. My family member is currently undergoing chemo, and we could not reach the doctor at that time in the morning, so he couldn't get his apartment treated. We complained to the landlord that he was not given enough time to consult with his doctor, and the landlord said tough, now you will have to pay for the exterminator.

just discovered them. i have about 16 to 20 big, extremely itchy bites in total, over the course of the past few weeks. apparently there were 2 other cases in my building a few months ago. i just talked to a bedbug expert, and he said that i should wrap the mattress first and see if i get anymore bites - if i don't it means that they are confined to the mattress and now destined to eventually starve inside the plastic wrap bedbug tomb (how pleasant!). if i keep getting bitten, then i need to have the major, heavy bedbug extermination. also, he said that it is important to get the place caulked, professionally, and very shortly after the extermination. he sounded like he knew what he was talking about and gave me all the advice i wanted, free of charge - plus his first plan of action did not involve him coming ion and doing anything, which made him sound credible. good luck to all the other unfortunate "hosts"!

Then the bugs came and found me and I mo;ved out. IN my new apt. I have not been comfortable to go to sleep because I have been traumatized by all this. I imagine and feel things on me. Hi I live in Las Vegas NV. We were living in an apt. on Swenson St. We went through the whole extermination process with great help from management and a great exterminator. It was a hoorible infestastion I had 100's of bites my 2yr. old looked scarry other kids were afraid of him and my newborn became anemic. Doctors just told us it was a rash and treated it with creams and steroids for the itching. The only way they could explain the babies problem was a "newborn" issue as he wasn't showing any bites. My husband never got bites. even after the killing process I just could not stay there I was to freaked out. So in May '07 we moved Well I have seen them in my new place and we are experiancing bites again. I am so depressed I was told even after 3 treatments some must have hid and we brought them with us. This is disgusting, I cry for my 2.5 yr old as he is effected the most by the bites. I would rather they just bite me he scratches himself constantly and knows our morning routine of "checking" for owees. We will begin treating or new place in the next week. I hope it is an easy masacre as I cant afford to throw out all the things we just replaced from the last time.

MOVING IS NOT ALWAYS THE ANSWER!!! The little MONSTERS will follow you!!!

Used flea and tick powder doesnt work. Landlord wont help and I thought he was a good person. I read there was a strong killer DDT or something for bed bugs but why isnt it being used. Health issues go either way. This country is based on what is the least harmful of two choices.

Just went into my bedroom to check for the bed bugs and noticed them running across the bed and along the side. About ten or twelve. Various sizes. I sprayed them directly with Lysol and noticed the small ones stopped in their tracks and with a little more saturation the larger ones stopped. I noticed they raised up on their rear legs, Im assuming in an attempt to suck what they thought was food(fluid) for them. Im no chem major but it stopped those few. After that it seemed like the Lysol brought a few out of hiding. So I sprayed them. In this entire epidemic filled city, are there no students taking chemistry that could help, or insect research students? Noone knows a next door neighbor bug exterm. who could give good advice on what to use? I lived to survive the onslaught of water bugs, roaches, mice, rats and crooks. Im not backing down from these things. The war is in our own houses. We need to gather our resources and combat this. Keep sharing. If youre in college check the Science or other related department, ask questions.

Re: Bed Bug Problem

Please be advised that a few of the apartments in the building have been treated by exterminators for bed bugs. As per the experts, unfortunately there really is not a method to pre treat the apartments for bed bugs to help prevent them from entering your apartment. For your knowledge and information attached please find the information we have gathered to educate you on bed bugs and how to avoid getting them. We hope this information will be helpful.

The cooperative is not responsible for paying for the treatment for bed bugs. We have arranged for Horizon Pest (917) 559-4559 to treat the affected units and a reasonable lower price. You may use any exterminator that you feel is suitable for you.

Should you have any questions regarding this matter, please feel free to contact me at (516) 437-3700.

I suspect the super had the notes removed, people took the furniture, and now I hear the whole building is infested. Shame on Pistilli Realty, and the super, Tommy if that's the case!

They moved me to another room, different wing, different floor, and I got bitten even worse. Maybe they have taken care of the problem by now, but then it seems to have been all over the hotel. And last June I was bitten at the Holiday Inn in Gaithersburg. Supposedly they exterminated the room in question (300), but I would be careful.

Old lady downstairs had them last year and landlord didn't tell anyone. Now mine and another older couple have them. Worst part is these are elderly people that cannot do all the proper cleaning and prep work for the exterminator, i.e. moving furniture away from walls and laundering all clothing and linens. So frustrating because bed bugs will inevitably come back because other apartments are not doing all the necessary steps other than having an exterminator come.

Please add:
43-06 45 Street
Sunnyside, NY 11104

to the list. I saw a flyer about bedbugs in a co-op building up the block maybe a year earlier and forgot about it. Then this past July I heard rumors of bedbugs in my building. One night I saw a strange bug on my pillow, caught it and looked it up on the Internet. I had no idea what a bedbug was and i sure never thought I would have to deal with them.

It took filing a complaint with the City of New York to get an exterminator. The chemicals were so toxic I could not move back in for months. Neighbors said up to 6 or 7 other apartments had bedbugs. The landlord apparently knew about other infestations in the building and on the block and was too cheap to do the extermination in the basement, etc when it would have been the most effective. The super finally admitted to two other apartments being exterminated. So I figure this translates to at least half a dozen apartments! This building is awful. When I made the complaint to the City about the bedbugs I made some additional complaints. The day the NYC building inspector came the person upstairs flushed the toilet and toilet water exploded through the light fixture in the bathroom! The building is fithy, not maintained and the landlord is corrupt and lazy. He has no incentive to do the right thing by the tenants and the neighborhood because every time an apartment is vacant he paints the walls and raises the rent. I am sure he would never tell a possible tenant about the bedbugs.

Anyway I feel like I have something like post traumatic stress disorder after this. It has been a nightmare. For those of you not familar with NYC - Astoria, Long Island City, Woodside and Sunnyside are all immediately next to each other. I agree with the previous comment bedbug capitol of the world.

Landlord waited over a month before doing anything about bedbugs. The landlord told each tenant that called to complain that their apartment was an "isolated incident" and they would have to take care of it themselves. It wasn't until someone got bold and posted signs in the stairwell that we learned the infesration had spread to at least 4 floors, and so many people called complaing that the exterminators finally came this morning. However, they only sprayed the baseboards. Landlord rude, not responsive at all, and lets not even get into the roach/mice/waterbug issues....

Reneau Real Estate is the management company. They manage many poorly-kept buildings in the Adams-Morgan/Dupont area. I had an infestation a year and a half ago and I am dealing with one today (literally waiting for the exterminator to visit). The management company is particularly unresponsive in many ways and the bedbugs in this particular building are a building-wide problem. I've seen several couches and mattresses in the garbage and plastic sheets hanging on fumigated rooms. There is no building-wide solution.

*******************************

In Dec I would wake up with these bites all over my arms and legs that would swell to the size of a loonie within 48 hours. I reported this to Management and they confirmed this building was definitely having issues with these pests. They offered to spray but required we box and bag everything in our unit. Since they would require many hours to do (and time I didn't have), I decided to take care of the problem myself. So I cleaned cleaned and CLEANED everything with hot water in the laundry, bought flea spray at the pet store and vacuumed the baseboards and floors everyday!!!! I finally got rid of this problem a month later but what an inconvenient and frustrating experience!

The Nob Hill Hotel,
835 Hyde Street, San Francisco, 94109

The Fitzgerald Hotel Union Square,
620 Post Street, San Francisco, 94109

We would like to nominate two sister hotels in San Francisco, they are both owned by the same person, a guy called Rudy Colombini, who seems to have a big bed bug problem at and both of his hotels. You can see many complaints about bed-bugs at both properties on Tripadvisor at this URL: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60713-d80768-Reviews-j1-Fitzgerald_Hotel_Union_Square-San_Francisco_California.html

We initially booked the Nob Hill Hotel last year for several nights. On arrival however they told us that it had been overbooked and that we would only be able to stay one night in the Nob Hill Hotel and the rest we would have to spend at their sister hotel - The Fitzgerald Hotel Union Square. In the middle of the night I was awoken to find myself bitten all across my arms. My wife had bites on her neck and arms too. Turning the light on we could see a veritable army of Bed Bugs on our sheets and under the pillows. We brought one downstairs wrapped in tissue paper but the staff at reception acted like they didn't know what it was...Yeah right!!...I could even see one of them poking the other one to not say anything! Thankfully, we were scheduled to move to the other hotel the next day. Unfortunately, the Fitzgerald Hotel had an even bigger problem with Bed Bugs. Our neighbor that night showed us one that she had caught in a clear plastic cup, it was the biggest bed bug I had ever seen - It was huge! We checked out immediately. Later we researched more on the internet and found out that many other people have written about similar experiences at both these buildings. Beware!!!
